ROAD RAGE & AGGRESSIVE DRIVING

Road rage & aggressive driving have been around since cars were invented.

Definition of aggressive driver:

We define aggressive driving as one of the four driving offenses: speeding, running a red light or stop sign, failure to yield the right of way, and reckless driving.

Definition of Road rage:

Usually begins with aggressive driving, but includes a physical assault stemming from a traffic dispute.

  • Drivers running red lights are responsible for approximately 260,000 crashes each year, of which approximately 750 are fatal.
  • On a national basis, fatal crashes at traffic signals have increased by 19% from 1992-1996.
  • During the same period red-light-running crashes increased 15%.
  • It is found that 3 out of 4 people are driving more aggressively than a few years ago

To Help reduce accidents NHTSA recommends you:

  • Do not challenge aggressive drivers by matching their behaviors.
  • Avoid making eye contact with aggressive drivers.
  • Ignore obscene gestures made by aggressive drivers.
  • Report aggressive driving to authorities, especially when it results in an accident.
